I love the idea of exploring space further but isn't the idea of mining materials from other planets and bringing them to earth kind of flawed? Overtime wouldn't this create an abundance of material earth didn't naturally have before? We talk about the delicate balance that is earth. If we started adding resources from other planets, surely this would invent more problems? In "The Moon" video, it mentions gathering gold and other precious metals and bringing them to earth. If you moved all that material over to earth, wouldn't that be like adding another small planet scattered across the surface, that would eventually end up in the soil thus changing earth composition? Not to mention chemicals and other things mentioned? Aside from being enticing, is "Gold" really the strongest reason to colonize the moon and other planets?

I don't think you're going to convince too many people to get on board a craft with practically no delta-V of its own, and no way to recover from an accident. And I think it's not as free as you think, and that drag and energy loss will mean a constant ferry service of Starship fuel tankers to refuel it so it can raise its orbit. I would say a tether system is best left for cargo only, with computers ensuring it's inserting cargo on the correct Trans-Martian Injection no matter the time of the orbits. It just takes shorter or longer to get there, that's all. And the stuff we send to Mars won't mind sitting in a container for a year or even longer. The tether would provide what Mars (and all human research stations) needs: a constant stream of supplies and materials on a year-round basis, and not just major influxes of ships every 26 months.

There's a pretty good excuse not to rely on tethers. If the cable (or even a rigid arm) is kilometers long, that's a lot of realestate to check stress fractures or micrometeoroid damage before every use. If the ship engines have been reduced to make room for comfort, what happens if a tether snaps half-way through a launch? That ship will take a really long time to stop itself and even longer to travel back to the launch point from whatever random direction it was flying in. And that's if the tether doesn't destroy itself and the ship in the process. Nobody could justify launching ships without the ability to recover from mishaps. Maybe the first few trips to a new place (Moon, Mars, across the Atlantic Ocean) are exploratory and run the risk of being one-way but the willingness to take that risk runs thin pretty quickly.
