@Fernando Mendoza this is awkward I am for civilized capitalism. Your point is well taken. Corporatism bastards and communism are very close to each other. Stealing is still a sin. But good business is an inspiration to progress society. So I think there might be a misunderstanding but if not thank you. 🕊️

@Michael S Are you talking serios? Did you know that corruption is even worst in communism right? The simple fact of being communist make you a criminal. If you want to help somebody the best way is giving a rod (capital) no a fish (allowance)... Then that person will put a company of fish, sushi restaurants will buy him, and he will use more rods of the fabric of rods, and he will buy boats in the store of boats that was bought in the company that make boats, he probably gonna need help so he's going to hire fishermen, and people will invest on his company so imagine all the franchaises that are going to appear... Well just imagine the jobs that were created with this example. That is how we can help people in the free market system: investing in new industries, creating companies, atracting companies, helping others to growth. The key is not allowance the poor, the key is make the poor growth.

What i understood was: Invest in a industry for make more people researching on it, it will make more development, cause there's more companies and it will make more jobs and increases the prosperity for those who are poor. Increasing the consumer's quality of life, so that make it profitable to invest in new industries. Stop using your money on fundations for Africa... It is Invest and innovate.

We are paranoid creatures, man. “Benefit of the doubt” would be good for all of us. I feel like we’re spending most time, energy and resources just checking on what other economically relevant countries are thinking or trying to accomplish. Ok, are the 9,200 downvotes/dislikes from people who benefit from inequality? Poverty is a natural “inevitability” sort of stuff? Just checking. I don’t have enough resources or control to make the changes this video argues.

Unfortunately today instead of wars, rich countries make stuff from poor countries and make sure poor countries stay poor so we can exploit them. it's not too good video, we in the 1st world have the all pleasures, cool stuff and a lot of food but it's not this way in... MAJORITY of the world. We made world a better place for a few but we don't care about most of Africa and Asia. there is a lot of hypocrisy, this video is great in a vacuum of middle class 1st world citizens. most of my cool stuff and majority of my nice food was made by poor people working for billionaires. We talk about space travel and cool gadgets and medicine not available for poor countries and never will be because poor people with no education have to work like crazy many hours just to feed their children. This is not good video

The major caveat here is that incentive for innovation is not always driven by personal financial gain. There are a lot of reasons why people look for better solutions to existing problems or for new solutions to as-of-yet unsolved problems, be it a desire to make an existing solution less of a burden to the inventors or innovators, to find a way to save more lives, or just because the inventors and innovators have a genuine passion for the subject matter. The rate of innovation is also not strictly dependent on the number of wealthy patrons you have, though more funding never hurts, the biggest bottleneck to innovation and invention is the number of passionate people you have working on the project in question. One of the very first professors I had in my engineering undergrad told us the story of a European inventor (whose name eludes me as of this moment) who had major funding from several nations to invent the world's first heavier-than-air flying machine. When he read in the paper that two bicycle shop owners in Ohio had done it first, he just quit, because the reputational and financial incentive were gone. No one is going to get rich off of being the second person to invent the airplane, so he didn't bother. The lesson that our professor was trying to tell us is that two people with little to no funding but a lot of passion for the subject will outpace a single person with a lot of funding but little to no interest in the subject matter beyond what they can gain personally from it every single time. So while more wealthy patrons can drive progress to an extent, they are far from the only drivers of progress

12 päivää sitten
Aaron A
Aaron A

@FaberOfWillAndMight You have completely missed the point. The point is not that over-exploited regions of the world should remain as they are, without sufficient infrastructure, education, and social services, these are all important from a humanitarian standpoint, and (as is the point of the video) an economic one. The point is that while market forces CAN drive innovation, they are far from the ONLY forces that drive innovation. In 2018 alone, the USDA added 67 new patents and 320 new inventions relating to improving and standardizing farming practices. In 1929, the patent for insulin was sold by its inventor to the University of Toronto for $1. The inventor said that the selling of such a live-saving invention for personal profit was highly unethical. So while market forces can drive innovation, especially as related to existing products and practices, those same market forces are extremely new in the context of human history (the system of modern capitalism on which the vast majority of the planet's economy is based has only been around a few hundred years), and the claim that innovation is entirely and eternally driven by supply and demand is both disingenuous to a lot of innovation and rationalizes (by omission of any other motive or force) selfishness as a universally beneficial human behavior, which is a difficult point to justify if you've made any in-depth study of human history.

FaberOfWillAndMight

Know instead make that argument but with the Wright brothers dyeing of starvation in Africa, you cant innovate if you cant cover your basic standards of living. Also inventing new things has become even harder due to the complex processes and specialization needed to create some of the most common household items nonetheless a fusion reactor. I understand that passion has a large part to do with innovation but increased specialization and complexity just makes the economy an even more integral part of innovation as well, or at leaser more than it used to.

Trickle down economics is a myth prepetuated by Reagan - and the premise at the start about living in a positive sum world? There is no account for the externalities of the ecosystem services we've over-exploited to the point of breaking in order to develop our economies. Kurzgesagt really needs to take a deep dive into environmental economics - their modified "greed is good" arguments are wearing really thin

14 päivää sitten
FaberOfWillAndMight
FaberOfWillAndMight

People like you have been saying that we will run out of recourses very soon since the start of the industrial revolution yet INOVATION has constantly won out in the long term and ultimately invocation is the long term solution to all environment scenarios, even you can agree that slowing down the economy is only a short term solution? So people have to ask themselves, how do we increase innovation? The answer, lift people out of poverty and you will have more innovators.

Going to Vote??? Listen up... Everyone is Egoistic, We reflect that in Our Votes as well... But which Egoism works Best for You??? 1. Purely Egoistic: Voting for the Candidate/Party that Best covers Your Interest of Your Wellbeing, without taking into account Their chance of Winning the Seat/Election... 2. Intelligent Egoism: Of the 2 or 3 possible winning Candidates/Parties, voting for the one that Best covers Your Interest of Your Wellbeing... 3. Egoistic Altruism: Voting for that Candidate/Party that would be the Best at working to improve that Wellbeing of the Most number of People in the Society, even if You aren't under Their Political Radar... If Egoistic Altruism is going to do no Good for You directly, why is it the Best option to choose??? To explain it in simple terms, more the number of People moving up with You, more the number of People Who will be able to provide You with what You need up there as only those equal to You will be able work to fulfill You expectations...

would like that vid much more without the attached solution path. i share the goal, but am repelled by the declaration of love to our younger history of capitalistic exploitation. Or did i missinterpreted the vid? Is it best archived with capitalism. how about we look at reality and wich other possabilities there are. the future is not just composed of of old way and our current way. i also think we need to make the world for everyone better to make it better for ourselfs. but i disagree with the way. better does not equal growth of the capitalist. that way comes with a price, that undermines the cause. inequality, polution, waste of resources and an destruction of our own habitat. but too many of us are willing to pay such a price for their new car, flight or sheap meat. the destruction of our future is something, that our barbaric ancestors are not guilty of. our current way of progress is build on the corpses of the weak and children of the future. we dont need all that stuff to feed the world and prevent wars out of need for food. but lets destroy the world to cure cancer ;)

Yes, there's positive sum. However, top capitalist siphon money from ppl. Income gap is still a major concern. Instead of relying on demand aka money to drive cancer research. Why people just don't list it as a priority and get governments to work on it. There are more crucial research than IT, phones and electric cars. Capitalism is just a bad bad choice. Stop competition, just collaborate everyone will be better off, that's what the prisoner's dilemma trying to teach.

This is literally the main reason I’ve always planned on becoming a millionaire. As a survivor of abuse, poverty and people’s lack of humanity, I’ve witnessed a lot of screwed up things in my 29 years alive. And I promised myself that if I ever got to that financial freedom, I would INVEST it fundamentally on helping others who have suffered like me. And I promise once again, that if my plan comes true, I WILL use that money on helping cure not only physical sickness such as cancer, but also the sickness in the heart of this society, by supporting those who need help but get abandoned, and investing on people whose dreams to make of this world a better place are being denied by the darkness in this society. I swear to God, if I ever have enough money, I will use it to remind everyone that there is still some humanity and goodness willing to help. Because we freaking deserve it. And because I know how it feels like to constantly experience the opposite.

What are the metrics for determining that someone living in a third world country, on their farm with their family and friends, is “worse off,” than a isolated, phone and drug addicted individual in the first world?

Child mortality poverty availability of food economic inequality are pretty good places to start just because You don’t like phones doesn’t mean we’d be better off in the medieval era

Humans are weird creature, they dwell into ideas like racial superiority even though all of them are stuck into a simple blue dot. It's laughable how some human think other humans value lesser than their people.

I disagree with some of the assertions of this video. The work of a poor farmer in another country *is* useful to me - it provides the food I eat. We don't have enough resources in our world to lift everyone to the same quality of life as Americans. We need to lift people out of poverty and provide for their basic human needs, but just as importantly we need to reduce the extravagant overconsumption of Western lifestyles. We also need to abandon our extractive model of limitless consumption and move to a fully circular economy.

Or just give people more freedom and let them make their own decisions lowering taxes and regulations.
