Just be aware that people tend to forget why we move to temporary solutions. We tend to get stuck trying to stretch temporary solutions until they become the new problem. This kick the can down the road mentality is also a reason why we are where we are.

But nuclear IS renewable, they can recharge the fuel rods in the newer reactors but we aren't building them in the US because of antiquated regulatory constraints. And the biggest problem with "renewables" such as solar and wind, is that they use up huge amounts of land. Often times arable land that we need to farm or as forest carbon sinks. Nuclear produces the most electricity for the least cost to the environment.

There is nothing we can do about climate change! It has been happening for millions of years an it always will happen! We should have started preparing 100years ago! If you look at the last 20000 years the earth's temperature has been falling at a steady rate and it will continue to! The earth has cooled 10 degrees since man first evolved with short slow warming periods and much longer cooling periods and man adapts very well. But when the earth good through long minimums the atmospheric Co2 drops rapidly and if it drops much more we won't have food!

It is not hard to transition from oil to nuclear. You simply get the nuclear plant online and tested, and only then shut the oil power plant down. Any power grid will collapse if its voltage or frequency vary by as much as 1% for up to 24 consecutive seconds. And the massive power storage facilities required if solar and wind are more than a tiny percentage of the total power generated, are prohibitively expensive.

I think the team of Kurzgesagt should investigate climate change beyond what mainstream political activists are saying. Even if the whole world magically switched to clean energy and CO2 emissions dropped to zero, the climate change will keep on going. Because it's something else that is causing it. Its the modern agriculture. The way we plow fields, build structures, cities and highways is the reason why it's happening. The terrain changes and the soil is damaged. It gets pressurized to the point where the natural pores dissappear and it no longer the water through. Ramps of soil that are built near highways drain the terrain of water. The underground water dries out too. The surface becomes dense and further prevents from water draining. Erosion happens more frequently. Vegetation dries on the newly drained landmass. Those surfaces spread and desert grows. Precipitation diminishes which further contributes to the area becoming dry. Because the ground can no longer absorb water properly, this causes more extreme floods that carry fertile soil to the rivers and eventually to the seas. And since all the vegetation is more dry, there are more wildfires. Good news is that this means that wo don't really need to do anything quickly about our use of oil and coal. And more good news is that this problem is easily solvable with our current technology just by plumping the soil up around our structures and fields. It requires minimal effort and energy. It just requires for humanity to learn this new practice. Bad news is that nobody talks about it yet, and that everyone is solving the wrong problem!

@Omar neither are renewables 'infinite' too, the materials used to construct wind turbines may be recycled yet material has to be manufactured. Transition to nuclear power as the majority source of power is inevitable for the advancement of humanity. Any other renewable energy sources are not feasible in most places of the world, filling up the gap from removing nuclear power and fossil fuel is equally difficult. Actually, it turns out Uranium is more plentiful than Thorium. I was researching it because I wondered the same thing and found that there is significantly more U 235 in the oceans than Thorium, while there is more Th on land the U, but the overall amounts are vastly different as there is 2/3 more sea than land. So, while thorium is good, there's more Uranium that could be extracted in a cost effective manner than Thorium.

We need to build new nuclear right now, and keep developing new types of reactors that can use the nuclear fuel better, if we can reuse old "waste" that still contains 99% fissile material, making a lower grade waste that needs shorter storage, we can build windmills and solar panels and storage for that meanwhile, and phase out the nuclear plants when solar/wind can take over the load. BUT WE MUST STOP POLLUTING BY BURNING FOSSILES NOW!

I'm pro-nuclear power. I'm baffled while governments worldwide (specially in developed countries) insist in fossil fuels, like oil and coal. I barely see any intention or proactive actions to really change this issue. You pretty much adressed the issues with renewable sources, particularly the inconsistency. If developed countries could generate 50-60% of their energy from nuclear power and other 20-30% from renewable sources we could tackle the climate change and the CO2 emissions much better. The rest could be allotted to natural gas, if needed at all. Modern nuclear fission reactors have a much better safety profile and safety mechanisms making the ideal source of energy security. Climate change and environment polution is a far more serious threat (versus the risk of nuclear fission power plants) and funds should be channeled towards the construction of nuclear power plants. If they united so well to channel funds for Covid-19 vaccines, they could do the same with nuclear power plants!

I doubt something as recent as that series has had that kind of influence. That all comes from the real Chernobyl incident, Fukushima, and similar things. No.... It isn't complicated. It's only complicated if you insist on using enriched Uranium as a solid fuel and water as a moderator and thermodynamic fluid. Wind and solar have a very limited place but you're never going to run a shipyard, steel mill or rail system with them. The Germans learned the hard way: they increased the capacity of both their solar and wind infrastructure by about 13% but now produce about 11% less energy overall bc no one explained to them that the sun doesn't always have to shine and the wind doesn't always have to blow. They now pay about 3X the amount per kilowatthr as the French do bc they have nuclear.

Nuclear power is currently the safest form of power generation. It should defiantly be used to stop fossil fuels in the short term. Eventually moving to renewables as soon as possible. Nuclear has such a bad rep due to the extremely rare but very publicised accidents. We as people need to realize our evolution and be part of the system instead of abusing it, big corporations and entity's do not care about nature or any other thing or anyone, if it does not give them money, power, or personal gain then it is useless to them. I am hopeful for the UK, they have recently got back onto the Nuclear train, with Hinkley point C being built. Wind power is the best though for the UK at the moment

Something you forgot to touch on: Wind and Solar are horribly inefficient. The amount of land and maintenance needed to produce even a fraction of nuclear power is just not worth it.

Plus there's one constant on this planet humans stupidity and incompetence and laziness most of the 500 plus nuclear accidents most of which never get a fanfare but leave acres and acres of land unusable for a couple hundred thousand years are from stupid humans. You just have to look at the political landscape of most countries in the last 10 years and see what so-called leaders and people move who are movers and shakers actually taking us somewhere. And the rest of us are supposed to even dumber so put those people in charge of nuclear power and I don't think so

It takes WATER to run Rankine engines, I.E., steam turbines for coal, oil, and yes, Nuclear power. It's important to get Nuclear power going that will: A) Uses up spent nuclear fuel, because the cost to maintain spent nuclear fuel repositories, and the danger of proliferatiin of radio isotones. 2) doesn't heat up the river down steam and kill of the food with fins in the rivers.
