Nuclear energy creates an uneasy feeling of danger for many people: ancient and dangerous minerals are concentrated to awaken seemingly unnatural powers, creating toxic elements that, if they escape, can and have killed people in horrible ways. How many people has nuclear energy killed and how?

We must also look at long term effects of any energy source.... hence i believe solar energy is the best.... requires minimal maintanence cost once installed, cheaper and eco friendly.... and absolutely no deaths for installing a solar panel at your home... this must be looked into and we must not overlook a completely ( cost, pollution, death)-free source of energy come on, it's time we do this... i don't know why on earth solar energy is so dang neglected

Why not send our nuclear waste into space, as in not into orbit, but out of our solar system. I understand that that takes a huge amount of energy to do, but wouldn’t it be worth it to get rid of the waste completely?

Is there a way to recycle nuclear waste into a usable material?
19 tuntia sittenviktor1496
yes! You can either chemically extract the dangerous parts of the waste which leaves you with just uranium that can be re-used (MOX fuel) Or you can use new fast neutron reactor types like the thorium reactors that are being built in China right now. If you let spent fuel rods sit in those for a while, when they come out they're only dangerous for approx 300 more years. Much more reasonable

I will have to ask, what about the hundreds of thousands of jobs that the coal industry brings. My friends family has a lot of coal miners and plant workers and I would hate to see them in poverty.
20 tuntia sittenviktor1496
It's harsh but they'll have to transfer to new jobs over time. New types of energy bring new jobs as well Of course it's up to the government to help those people re-educate themselves or to make sure they can transition to new jobs. But that's a social issue

People arguing about the death tolls of nuclear energy rely a lot on the "but sometimes" argument. We have something that's superior in many ways, but sometimes bad things happen. This ignores the same issue that happens with current technologies just to stay where things feel familiar.

We don't have any tech reliable enough to throw nuclear waste in space. Only one launch has to go wrong and you have a disaster on your hands. That said, there are multiple places on earth where it is completely safe to stock it underground.
Päivä sittenVeridan
Just use solar panels...
Päivä sittenviktor1496
Ignorant answer, An energy grid can not run on 100% wind/solar. With current battery tech we can achieve 40-50% at most (still considerably higher than what we have now) The rest needs to be filled up with regulatable sources: Hydro, Fossil fuels or nuclear. Air pollution by fossil fuels kills millions every year. Hydro is at least as dangerous as nuclear and is reaching its limit, there are only so many rivers to be dammed. So do you want air pollution and global warming or nuclear and temporarily deal with the nuclear waste problem?
Päivä sittenozan baş
death toll caused by chernobyl way way much higher. due to radiation spilled around black sea coast, all the vegetation had been poisened. governments denied its level of effects. people consume the crops and animals, cancer became an epidemic in the area for tens of years.
Päivä sittenviktor1496
@ozan baş With current battery tech, we can only at maximum use around 40% solar/wind. Please tell me which energy source you would suggest for the remaining 60%?
Päivä sittenozan baş
@viktor1496 in my point it is not acceptible. there is far more harmless and riskfree options out there
Päivä sittenviktor1496
@ozan baş And that's the point, air pollution by fossil fuels kills millions every year. Hydrodams destroy their environment and ecosystem and have killed many in cases of failure. Compared to that, a nuclear disaster every few decades if far preferable. Especially if it remains as limited as it did in Fukushima.
Päivä sittenviktor1496
@ozan baş Those numbers include all predicted cancers and premature deaths caused by radiation leaks. In Fukushima, practically no one got a dangerous dose of radiation contrary to Chernobyl. After 10 years, there are no noticeable increases in risks for cancers...etc for those who lived around the reactor. It's you who is looking for death and destruction where there is none.
Päivä sittenozan baş
@viktor1496 you only see numbers of direct kills. that is selfish and unethical. you have to consider all effects. like how fossil burning contaminate air and cause death of millions, spread of leaked nuclear radiation, poisining the earth, water, oceans by ditching the nuclear waste can not be ignored. they have long lasting effects. you may like "mutants" in hollywood, it doesn't work like that irl.
Päivä sittentitos21100
there is a thing called "Carbon capture and storage", doesnt that make fossil fuel burning better than nuclear?

I think the problem is that people can use the big explosions and disasters from Chernobyl and Fukushima to demonize nuclear energy, and don't realize that while not as dramatic, air pollutions kills many, many more.

@Kharkov Luzhin My argument for nuclear? Clean air, far less CO2, stable power source ideal for the base load, future potential with new generations of reactors, safety (really, 2 accidents in 30 years are the problem?) and much less waste compared to every other power source.
5 tuntia sittenKharkov Luzhin
@deadbeef nope, my argument is about 1000 people die a year is less compared to than fossils energy in the same circumstances, more over, we had found somewhat of a way to recycle the nuclear waste just not efficient, while we have no idea how to stop fossils fuels from polluting the air and absolutely no way to fix what happens to the atmosphere. What is your argument?

What a great explanation. I'd love that video on waste.
2 päivää sittenMr surname
I'm still disappointed about this video. You should have included theoretical models (numbers). 2 accidents are not very meaningful. You ignored the fact that the cloud was moving east and not west to tokio. Obviously, very lucky. Also there is a difference between a 60-70 year old who dies early bc of air pollution and a baby, who has died bc of fukushima. Sadly multiple pregnant women got radiated. The video simplifies the discussion and undermines your earlier good video series on nuclear energy. Proof is all the postive commentarys here. They all have forgotten or never have seen the other videos.
2 päivää sittenviktor1496
@Mr surname Despite your big words, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Resorting to ad hominem attacks won't change the fact that you haven't been able to elaborate ANY of your points. Never use one source? They used many, you clearly haven't looked at the reference list linked in the video. Never use one statistic? They didn't. You're talking out of your ass instead of explaining yourself. Good day
Päivä sittenMr surname
@viktor1496 I was trying to explain you why kurzgesagt can't say "nuclear energy is more safe than its seems like" and more based on this numbers. And I don't know why you don't get it. It's basic scientific work. It's the first you learn at university. Never ever use just one source. And even more, not just a statistic. And that is what happend here. And that is my critic on this video. You can compare the numbers. But they did more than that. You started your own debate here, I can't help you with that. And sorry, "I was writing a essay about it" oh man. You don't talk like a scientist bc you aren't one. I got it know. Sadly a bit late. Explains your lack of understanding of scientific work. Your level of science is what kurzgesagt does. So, stick here. It's made for people like you
Päivä sittenviktor1496
@Mr surname You have never once mentioned anything except "you can't use statistics alone" and "they need the theoretical risks"..... yet you fail over and over again to elaborate on the matter except for one flawed analogy. I think it's indeed best to end this if you can't build on your argument. I asked for examples and got nothing
Päivä sittenviktor1496
@Mr surname 1)Estimates are unavoidable, it's impossible to include the exact number of deaths from f.e. cancers that appear years after an accident. The best you can do is give the lowest and highest estimates, which they did. 2)Of course they ignored theoretical risks, since calculating such a theoretical model is highly subjective in itself. Once you go down that road, you also have to guess the chances of dams breaking and include that in hydro...etc. 3)They gave the total numbers and the deaths per energy unit produced. The video is called "how many people did nuclear power kill".... how does that not answer that question, what other stats would you even WANT? 4)Your figure of 15 includes partial meltdowns and meltdowns on the same sites but with different reactors, and most of them caused no serious problems at all except of course for Three mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. Your statistics aren't wrong, however you deliberately misrepresent it.
Päivä sittenMr surname
@viktor1496 I wrote to kurzgesagt, not to you in the first place. I haven't written this to prove nuclear tec is right or wrong. you started a debate over it. They compared total numbers with estimated numbers. Mistake number one. They ignored theoretical risks. Mistake number two. They used only one statistic to prove their point. Worst mistake above all. I can do this too. We had approx 15 meltdowns since 1952. So we have a meltdown every 4,6 years? No we don't have, because you have to include theoretical numbers. Modern plants are way safer. Don't ever base your option on statistics! It's always simplified and ignores facts. I won't repeat myself what they did ignore. OK, let's end this. It's too time consuming
