For most of our history, the human population grew slowly. Until new discoveries brought us more food and made us live longer. In just a hundred years the human population quadrupled.
This led to apocalyptic visions of an overcrowded earth. But the population growth rate actually peaked in the 1960s. Since then, fertility rates have crashed as countries industrialize and develop. World population is now expected to balance out at around 11 billion by the end of the century.
But the big picture conceals the details.
Let us look at one region in particular:
Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2019 it was home to a billion people living in 46 countries. Although its growth rate has slowed down in the last few decades, it is still much higher than in the rest of the world.
While some projections expect around 2.6 billion people others reckon with up to 5 billion by 2100.
Such growth would be a huge challenge for any society. But Sub-Saharan Africa is also the poorest region on earth.
So is Sub-Saharan Africa doomed? And why do the projections vary by 2.4 billion people?

@shoof Yep there are indeed outliers to this phenomenon, but generally it seems more religious countries have more children than non-religious or more secular countries.
5 päivää sittenshoof
@12shzarmai 55 Technically, while a lot of high birth rate countries have more attachment to religion, it's not necessarily causation than it is correlation. Catholics, Hindus, Jews, and Muslims have maybe 1-2, or maybe 4 to 6 children depending on the country our region they live in, and that number depends entirely on the culture the parents grew up in. Even in wealthy, relatively religious countries like the US and Korea, socioeconomic status seems to affect birth rate more, which is why it's not considered to be much of a factor compared to poverty, culture, and child mortality. I don't know about most religions preaching about childbirth though, but for sects that do I'd assume that'll be a more substantial factor.

@ProvenScroll guess that depends on how you define "working". i can't see muslim culture working anywhere in europe and it's not much better with the black community. USA probably works a little better cause you don't have so much social welfare and people are somewhat forced to join the workforce.
Tunti sittenProvenScroll
I think he meant for developing nations, diversity is not really a problem when a nation is developed because at that point there is an stable established government that everyone listens to. That's why nations like the usa and most of europe work, because they have been around for so long

African countries don't need attention and investment, they need old and new colonial influences to get the f*ck out of there, part of this entails giving back what we stole and are still stealing. It's a disgrace. Not them. We. are.

Isn't the global issue an unfair and unbalanced distribution of resources rather than overpopulation? I wish this was explored because it is not a fact but an opinion that not everyone shares, yet it has been presented as a factual issue without any nuance in the video.
Päivä sittenQuinn Smith
You're correct; it is factually accurate that the problem is terrible governance and not "overpopulation". Malthusianism has been proven to be wrong for centuries: resources that used to be scarce are made abundant by advanced technologies. For example: overpopulation will never exist because technological progress increases the planet's carrying capacity.

If Africa becomes educated and medicated what’s left is being feared by those bitter colonial people unwilling to let black people have their own land without their close enough to touch involvement. You don’t see Africans reporting on European growth rates or even studying others the same in anthropology, other nations interfering with the continent is what made a free land cost money in the first place. simply giving money to poor countries isn't really helpful at all. Building Schools and Hospitals in poor countries helps a lot more as a long term investment and it allows undeveloped nations to have the resources they need to develop themselves and not have to rely on other countries.

That's why I am asking why the African governments did not collaborate to create more representative borders. If people hate the arbitrary European drawn lines why are they kept?? In the Western world there have been votes held on the matter of territory, such as if Scotland wanted to become independant, same with Quebec. Other disbutes such as ownership of GIbraltar and the Falklands have been put to a vote.
Päivä sittenMme. Veronica
Because Europe drew the lines in the sand for their colonies, then when they couldn't keep their colonies they just said, "I'm leaving you can clean up the mess I made" and didn't redraw the maps. Europe didn't care about Africa when they couldn't exploit it any more and just left a bunch of different ethnic groups to fight.

5 billion Africans is really too much, considering how small the usable agricultural land will be in 2100. We may need another Trump in the US who accidentally hits the red button and blows up all the big cities in Africa. @EyFmS yes, that's what i'm saying; i think developped country should keep an eye on poor education and how they spend money so like that there will be no corruption :^
6 päivää sittenEyFmS
@みみきP official Of course, education is a solution, this is why one of the relief packages they was to build schools. It's a complicated issues since even with the proper structure you still need teachers and a education system that works, sadly those things poor countries usually lack terribly. With the case of Haiti it's a double edged situation...if you send too much they can become a country of beggars that will forever rely on foreign aid...they need to learn to rise up.
6 päivää sittenみみきP official
@EyFmS what i mean is money and also EDUCATION, countries should supervise in the back if the money they give is well used. they perfectly know that what they give is not fully invested in the project but they probably do nothing about it.

One of the biggest issues is countries investing in the economy, but in the wrong way. I live in Zimbabwe and China is extracting natural resources for themselves instead of the government owning the mines. If the government owned the mines and were less corrupt then the government would have a lot of money for investment. China is helping us very little, and we don't want them taking our resources, but the government does, because China is paying good money, but only to the government which is, like I said earlier, corrupt. It simply won't work. There's another issue: Getting resources here is hard. Many, many resources here aren't produced close by because there is low amounts of people who can buy it, so the only resources that are cheap is locally farmed. Buying ice cream in like 7 USD because it's shipped from absurd distances. If there were more factories in African nations, we would have much more jobs and much more people who can afford the product. The problem is, companies are too afraid to invest in African nations, because the confidence for a return on investment is low. I wish people would understand us better. Not all of us are starving and poor. In fact, most of us aren't. We're humans too. I get up, I have a morning routine, I go to work like everyone else in the world. I buy groceries every week, and I make plans. Investors assume that we're all too poor, but I've been avoiding saying poor, because we're really not. Generalizing Africa like that is already offensive. Countries like Botswana have a surprisingly good average quality of life, even in the rural areas.
